Portable Media Players: Toshiba Gigabeat S30 & S60 Review by Anything But iPod

Anything But iPod have review the Toshiba S30 and S60:
Toshiba Gigabeat S

The highly anticipated third installment of Toshiba’s hard drive based MP3 player has finally been released after many months of waiting. Released in two different capacities, 30GB and 60GB, this player is graced with an amazing interface, powered by Microsoft’s Portable Windows Media Center. This platform allows for many easy to use features such as FM radio, photo browsing, on-the-go playlists, and video-out. Lacking in the file support area, the Gigabeat S supports MP3, WMA, WMV, and WMA Lossless. This media player is compatible with many different music services and some of the new video services. It also integrates with the Xbox 360, Tivo Series 2, and Windows Media Center.

Portable Media Players: Toshiba gigabeat S - review by PC Magazine

PC Magazine have rated the Toshiba Gigabit S portable media player a 4/5:
Toshiba Gigabeat S

Bottom Line:I’m a little disappointed by the gigabeat’s short battery life and the lack of a voice recorder, but you get your money’s worth with a high-quality, elegant audio/video player that has plenty of style and polish.

Pros: Very good sound quality. Videos and photos look excellent. Interface is polished and easy to use. Very attractive. Supports WMA Lossless.

Cons: Buttons on the side should be on the front or integrated with the cross-shaped controller. No voice recorder. Short battery life for audio playback. No Audible support.

Portable Media Players: Toshiba Gigabeat S-series

CES 2006: DAPReview provide a hands on comment on the new Toshiba S-series Gigabeat, including pics:
Toshiba Gigabeat S

At the pre-show event tonight, The Digital Experience, the most interesting device on display was Toshiba’s new S-series GigaBeat. Not much of a name, not too shocking a design (just a revamped version of the old faithful F-series) but… certainly worth looking at.

Still no word on the size of the display though.

NEWS: Toshiba SD-P2800 Portable DVD player - via MobileWhack.com

MobileWhack alert us to a new portable DVD player from Toshiba.
Toshiba-Sp-P2800

Toshiba Japan has announced the introduction of the new SP-P2800 portable DVD player - a truly decked out DVD player. The player has a display capable of 800 x 480 resolutions and a viewing angle of 170 degrees all around.

The SP-P2800 supports DVD-Video, and DVD-R/RW in VR mode. You’ll also be able to play back MP3, DivX, and WMA files stored on CD/CDRW discs. The device includes a 14 bit/108MHz video DAC for high quality picture conversions.

One final tidbit - the SP-P2800 has a built in 4 in 1 card reader (supporting SD< MMC, Memory Stick, and XD picture cards). MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX files can be played back directly from these memory cards onto the player. There’s also tuners for television, CATV, and FM Radio.

It’s that last paragraph that is most interesting. Will we see a merger of devices so that portable DVD players will also sport hard disks? This suits us fine as sometimes you don’t have the time to rip a DVD to watch on a HDD based player. But you’d still have the ability to load the player up with the kid’s favorite movies for that long road trip.

NEWS: Toshiba X-series MP3 players to come available in 20 & 60GB (X20 & X60) models

Toshi03DAPReview reports on news that the Toshiba X-series MP3 players are also to come available in 20 & 60GB (X20 & X60) models:

Toshiba’s upcoming X30, a continuation of the current F-series, will have to make some room to fit in two little brothers. Well - 1 little brother, the X20 (20GB) and one bigger brother, the 60GB X60.

The X20 will measure some 99.3×59.3×14.5mm @ 134g, whereas the X60 will be 3mm fatter than that, at the expense of an additional 13 gram. Prices have been set to 23k Yen & 45k Yen (239/326 Euro) for the 20-gigger and 60GB edition respectively. Pretty cheap to Japanese standards, if we may say so.

MP3 Players: Toshiba Gigabeat MEG-F20K (20GB)

Toshiba’s Gigabeat MEG-F20K (20GB) has been reviewed by cNet, who rated it 7/10
Toshiba Gigabeat

The good: Bright and gorgeous 2.2-inch color LCD screen; direct-to-player CD ripping with included docking cradle; compatible with subscription services such as Napster To Go; eye-catching and customizable wallpaper and screen themes; available in a variety of capacities; programmable hot key.
The bad: Cradle requires separate AC connection; counterintuitive controls and confusing menus; multiple software applications needed, including the frustrating bundled Gigabeat Room software; no belt clip or in-line remote-control pad included; no FM tuner; no voice or line-in recording; no USB 2.0 support for Windows Media Player 10.0 or Napster.
The bottom line: Toshiba adds some useful technology and features not found on the iPod, but too many unnecessary limitations, sloppy software, and counterintuitive ergonomics add up to a wasted opportunity.
