MP3 Players: iRiver U10

Came across this recent review of the popular iRiver U10 by the HiFi Blog. :
 iRiver U10

Overall, this is a great and (relatively) powerful device but what kills it is the high price tag. 1GB costs $249, this is what a 4GB Nano costs (never mind the fact that it doesn’t play videos). Maybe they should start working on a micro-HDD based device? I could see myself paying the same amount for 4 gigs of storage, even if it meant slightly larger dimensions and a possibly smaller battery life (28 hours are high enough so that a small reduction wouldn’t hurt anyone); both of which are to be expected when going from Flash memory chips to hard drives.

Portable Media Players: iRiver U10 1GB

EverythingUSB provide an indepth review of the iRiver U10 portable media player, drawing the same concluson we have. More memory please!
Iriver U10-1

Pros: Multi-function extravaganza; tiny, excellent interface and controls; superb battery life.
Cons: Limited to 512MB or 1GB; expensive; video limited to 15fps in a single format.
Verdicts: Ultra-cool and ultra-capable, but the limited storage capacity makes it hard to justify the price.

MP3 players: iRiver U10 (1GB)

cNet provide an indepth review of the iRiver U10 (1gB) MP3 player, giving a pretty decent 8.3 out of 10.
Iriver U10-4

The good: Wonderfully sleek and stylish design; unique and intuitive interface; supports OGG files and subscription content; includes FM radio, voice recorder, alarm clock, and SRS Wow sound effects; photo, video, and text viewing; great battery life.
The bad: Expensive; maximum capacity is 1GB; no autoplay; no album art; useful cradle is sold separately.
The bottom line: The pricey iRiver U10 is a superbly designed MP3 player that is both easy to use and packed with pretty much every feature in the book. But Apple won’t be quaking in its boots until iRiver ups its capacity to 2GB and 4GB.

REVIEWS: iRiver U10

iRiver U10 MP3 Player
Engadget provide a brief review of the soon to ship iRiver U10 flash based MP3 player

There’s one thing that Ryan and I discovered at last night’s DigitalFocus press event: that the iRiver U10 is freaking hard to properly photograph. There was something about the mini media player’s glossy screen that defied our every attempt to snap a decent pic, but we managed to nail a couple that should give you a good sense of just how small it really is. The 2.2-inch LCD screen is definitely more like what you’d find on a cellphone, but the UI is totally slick and the U10’s “D-Click” navigation system (which actually hides the buttons behind the edge of the screen) works way better than we’d imagined it would. Anyway, iRiver’s rep told us that the U10 should ship next month, confirming that the 512MB will go for $199 and the 1GB version will sell for $249. Seems a bit steep, especially in light of, uh, recent events, but whatevs.
