Portable Media Players: Zune Not Exactly Tearing Up the Sales Charts - Gizmodo

Gizmodo reports Amazon is showing the Zune is not selling too well:
Microsoft Zune-1

According to Amazon.com’s MP3 player sales charts, the Zune is their 18th most popular portable music player. Ahead of it, unsurprisingly, are 12 varieties of iPod (including the top 5 spots). A bit more surprising is the fact that also selling better than the Zune are three flavors of SanDisk Sansas and the Creative Zen Vision: M. Looks like the social isn’t all that social just yet

Accessories: EZL holds portable media player up

Ubergizmo reports on a neat little stand for iPods and other MP3 players
Ezygear

We all know how crappy in-flight entertainment is, so why not carry a whole bunch of videos with you the next time you board a long haul flight? Unfortunately, holding the iPod (or any other object for that matter) in the same position for long periods of time could lead to unnecessary muscle strain, which is why ezGear developed the EZL device that helps keep your portable media player in place on a tray table right in front of you. Non-skid pads located at the bottom ensure your favorite portable media player won’t pull a Tonya Harding on you. Once you’re done with the movie/video, just pick up the EZL and fold it into a quarter inch thick package. You can purchase this useful device as a gift for your loved one today for

MP3 Players: MP3 Pen

The MP3 Players reports on an MP3 pen:
Mp3 Pen

This is a pen, but not just a pen. The pen, with length of 148mm and diameter of 18mm, does play music too! The upper part of the pen is actually an MP3 player with 512MB of memory. It does have everything of a common digital audio player, except a display screen. Other than audio playback, it also has a built-in FM tuner and voice recording function.

Not sure how practical it will be if you try and write at the same time as listening - cord dangle could be annoying. Interesting they still manage to include voice recording and FM tuner. Hello Apple?

Media Players: TrustedReviews - LG Makes Touchscreen MP3 Player

Trusted Reviews tell of a new media player from LG with its controller built into its screen, albeit, confusingly named, MFJM53:
Lf-Mfjm53

Now this may only be a new one on me, but I can’t remember having seen a dedicated MP3 player with touch screen navigation before so a hearty slap on the back to LG for making one.

First, however, some heavy criticism. Why oh why oh why do companies make players with such unmemorable names?! Of Apple’s competitors only Creative can really escape without much blame but really, this device is called the MFJM53! Can you really imagine going into a store and asking for a “Mmmphjuhmmm53” or would you just give up half way through and say “Pass me an iPod”?!

We look forward to seeing how well these go. And are they a clue to how the iPod video will work?

MP3 Players: Replacing the iPod interface with Rockbox - CNET reviews

cNet review a replacement operating system for your iPod or other MP3 player, called Rockbox, that brings a lot of new features:
Rockbox

In its current state, the Rockbox interface is utilitarian, graphically sparse, and reminiscent of a command-line system, and it lacks the flash of modern commercial MP3 players. But where it comes up short in pizzazz, it more than compensates in options and settings, many of which would make the default iPod jealous. Using RockPod is fun

This is an interesting project that will be well worth follwoing.

MP3 Players: Shiro Soccer Ball MP3 Player (The Gadget Blog news)

The Gadget Blog report on another gimmicky MP3 player, the Shiro Soccer Ball MP3 player, though no word on the memory:
Shiro Soccer Ball MP3 player

Shiro scores a winning MP3 player that’s 37.4mm diameter in size, powered by a Sigmatel chipset and a self-illuminated OLED display that’s showed up under the clear sun too. The FM radio allows you to catch the latest football highlights and you can also record the ‘live’ commentary of your favourite moments while you are on the move. Too bad you can’t throw this ball when your favourite defender does a own goal or it’ll go flying into pieces

MP3 Players: Sungale MP3 Watch (ChipChick news)

ChipChick report the availability of a rather unusual MP3 player, the Sungale MP3 Watch:
Sunglae MP3 Watch

The problem with many mp3 watches is that they tend to be ugly and bulky. Here is one whose classic-looks would never let you guess it also played mp3s.  This Mp3 watch available from First Street also has a built-in voice recorder, it weighs 8 ounces, is water resistance, has a Citizen Quartz Mechanism, comes with retractable headphones, and it has a decent 10 hour battery life.  Unfortunately it only has 256MB of memory inside. The watch retails for $139.95.

Seems to us that having your ears and wrist tethered to each other would become quite annoying. That said, with wireless earphones this could be really popular.
