Pocket-lint report Mustek have released some interesting new portable DVD players:

Mustek has launched two new portable TV/DVD players in the run up to Christmas. With integrated an DVB-T receiver, the devices can not only playback DVDs and CDs, but digital TV as well.

Sounds like a great idea for the long car trips.

FosFor Gadgets reports the availability of the Philips PET1002 portable DVD player:

Philips PET1002 is the latest portable DVD player from Philips. It’s capable of delivering a five-hour battery playback on the big 10.2″ screen. It can play all the usual formats including DivX and MPEG4. The price tag reads $399 and it’s available now.

MobileWhack report the availability of a portable DVD player from Mustek that includes a TV tuner, the Mustek DTV407:

Here’s an example of cramming too much into one device. The new Mustek DTV407 is a portable DVD player that includes a terrestrial digital TV receiver.

This means you can access DVB-T, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. You also get a remote control to go with the DTV407. Capable of storing a thousand channels, you don’t have to be a couch potato anymore to access your favorite TV shows.

The screen is rather nice at 7″, an active matrix TFT screen. The standard set of features, of course, include playback of DVDs, CDs, MP3s and JPEG photos. Also get a rechargeable battery and car lighter adapter for US $365

MobileWhack report from CES 2006 that Axion have released another player, this time the AXN-6072 portable DVD player:

Axion’s latest innovation was unveiled by it at CES ’06, it announced a new product called the AXN-6072. The AXN-6072 is a 7″ LCD TV/DVD player. It is a dual-screen portable LCD product enabling user to utilize this feature by watching the DVD on one screen and playing video games on the other.

MobileWhack tell us of the upcoming release at CES of two new portable DVD players from Mustek:

Mustek will also be unveiling two new, affordable DVD players at the CES in January, the MP70C (pictured on the right) and MP72. Both the players sport a 7″ screen.

There does seem to be a rash of new portable DVD players entering the market lately which would indicate that these are selling well still, despite the competition from the hard drive based players. The most likely reasons would be the larger screens and not having to go through the somewhat slow process of uploading video - and being limited to only those movies on the device.

Mustek have announced an upcoming 10inch portable DVD player, the Mustek MP100, as MobileWhack report:

Mustek today announced that it will be launching its new line up of DVD players for 2006, including the spiffy Mustek MP100 featuring DivX support. It’s a portable little desktop theater with a 10″ 16:9 widescreen swivel LCD.

The MP100 plays DVDs, CD/R/RW, MPEG4, MP3 for audio and comes with integrated image viewer. While USB 2.0 compatibility is not clear, it features an MMC/SD card reader, which means you can quickly preview songs/photos from several portable devices that use these cards.

The MP100 also offers anti-shock protection - very useful of course - and progressive scan for some very neat image quality. The battery life is supposed to be pretty good, and it can be recharged quite easily.

The Copy TF-DVD7050 portable DVD player is getting some excellent user reviews over at Amazon. Portable dVD players are still the best bang-for-buck when it comes to portable video as the hard disk players are either too expensive or have small screens. Here’s a few user comments from Amazon:

This unit offers the best bang for the buck that I have ever seen in a DVD player of this sort. It feels extremely well made (with some metal parts even) and seems very durable. The unit seriously reminds me of a Panasonic Toughbook in some ways, although I doubt it’s THAT well built. It is, however, the toughest portable DVD player I’ve ever felt.

This player has an amazing image (especially for the price) and a “high quality” feel to it. It comes with everything needed to play in a car (including two pairs of heaphones, splitter, tape adapter, power adapter, etc..) great little unit! I can’t get over that screen!

And as I always say of portable DVD players - they’re a godsend in the car with kids on a long trip. They also totally prevent car-sickness in my kid who usually gets car sick backing out of the driveway!

Looking for a DVD player for the holday drive to keep the kids quiet? The Philips PET1000 (sounds like a computer from the 80s) might just fit the bill

The good: Sleek design; excellent image quality for portable DVD player; large 10-inch screen; car adapter included; component-video out; two headphone inputs; plays MPEG-4, DivX files video files, and MP3 CD-Rs.

The bad: Expensive; hefty; does not display JPEG photos.

The bottom line: While the Philips PET1000 isn’t exactly svelte or inexpensive, it is one of the sleekest and best performing portable DVD players.
