Portable DVD Players: Samsung DVD-L70

Samsung’s DVD-L70 portable DVD player has been favorably reviewed by PC Magazine and as a parent… I can relate to theor sentiments.
B2C M Dvdl70

Samsung bills the DVD-L70 as an affordable, 7-inch widescreen DVD player that two people can share in the backseat. We’d call it a $200 insurance policy that keeps the kids from watching DVDs on your $1,500 laptop. And later if not sooner, they’ll either spill soda into the mechanism, the family dog with the pea-size bladder will mistake it for a patch of green grass, or it will be slammed against something hard in the “Hey, I had it first” tussle. Maybe the better term is collision deductible

Bottom line: An affordable 7-inch-display portable DVD player from a name you’ve heard of with a reasonable, if small, picture.
Pros: Affordable DVD player. Two headphone jacks. No installation hassles. AC and 12 volt transformers.
Cons: Others cheaper. Short battery life (2:42; sibling DVD-L75 is better). Smallish screen.

Portable DVD Players: Nextbase DVM-235

Ubergizmo report the release of a personal portable DVD player, the Nextbase DVM-235
Dvd4 Img02

Korean company NextBase presents the DVM-235, a video/audio player that has a particular small LCD screen: it oriented outwards, which makes the whole device more compact (compared to other DVD players) when closed and in use. The DVM-235 is a little bit thick, but I guess that all the drive mechanics must fit somewhere. Pretty interesting concept, even of the overall design could be a lot better.

Portable DVD Players - jWin JD-VD736

Engadget report on a new style portable DVD player, the :
Jdvd736 260

We’ve never heard of electronics manufacturer jWin before, but that isn’t stopping them from trying to earn a place in our travel bag with their budget-minded JD-VD736 3.6-inch portable DVD player. Kind of a small screen, we realize, but we’ve been known to watch 2-hour American Idol specials on our Treo 600’s smaller, low-res screen, so the progressive scan jWin certainly wouldn’t be untenable. Throw in MP3 CD playback, an SD/MMC slot for pics and tunes, credit card remote, and that flip-less monoblock form factor we’ve been seeing more of these days, and you’ve got a nice set of specs for $220.

This one’s a bit different, seemingly aimed more at the single-viewer market - like most current hard disk based portable video players. It’s not one you can set up in the car for the kids to watch. But if you’ve got the money get ‘em one each!

NEWS: Toshiba SD-P2800 Portable DVD player - via MobileWhack.com

MobileWhack alert us to a new portable DVD player from Toshiba.
Toshiba-Sp-P2800

Toshiba Japan has announced the introduction of the new SP-P2800 portable DVD player - a truly decked out DVD player. The player has a display capable of 800 x 480 resolutions and a viewing angle of 170 degrees all around.

The SP-P2800 supports DVD-Video, and DVD-R/RW in VR mode. You’ll also be able to play back MP3, DivX, and WMA files stored on CD/CDRW discs. The device includes a 14 bit/108MHz video DAC for high quality picture conversions.

One final tidbit - the SP-P2800 has a built in 4 in 1 card reader (supporting SD< MMC, Memory Stick, and XD picture cards). MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX files can be played back directly from these memory cards onto the player. There’s also tuners for television, CATV, and FM Radio.

It’s that last paragraph that is most interesting. Will we see a merger of devices so that portable DVD players will also sport hard disks? This suits us fine as sometimes you don’t have the time to rip a DVD to watch on a HDD based player. But you’d still have the ability to load the player up with the kid’s favorite movies for that long road trip.

REVIEWS: Initial IDM-1731 7″ Portable DVD Player - cNet

With video enabled iPods and other media-less portable video players dominating the news lately, cNet has squeezed in a review of a portable DVD player, the Initial IDM-1731 (someone gets paid to come up with these names…), although they have seen better, giving this one only a 6/10
31309339-2-300-Overview-1

The good: Low price; crisp picture; long battery life; S-Video output; compact and light; plenty of volume through headphones; car adapter included.

The bad: Awkward battery charging and connection; long battery-charge time; no separate contrast control; remote necessary for many basic functions.

The bottom line: The Initial IDM-1731 portable DVD player offers a budget price and a decent-looking picture, making it a solid choice.

For us, the portable DVD player is still a very useful device, one because they have large screens and two, you don’t have to spend any time uploading your movies so can be more reactive in what you watch. There’s life on the old portable DVD player yet. Our own experience are they are a godsend for long car trips, and can prevent car sickness.
